How we started

A two-desk houseboat booking office, grown by referral

Travela opened in 2007 out of a single room near Dal Lake, booking houseboats for backpackers who'd found us through word of mouth. There was no marketing budget โ€” every booking came because someone's trip went well enough that they told a friend.

That's still how most of our business arrives. We've added Ladakh, Rajasthan, Kerala and eight more circuits since, but the test for any new route is the same one we used in 2007: would we send our own family on it?

Milestones

Eighteen years, roughly in order

2007

Opened the Srinagar desk

Started with houseboat bookings on Dal Lake and a handful of shikara operators we still work with today.

2012

Added Gulmarg & Pahalgam circuits

Brought on dedicated drivers and guides for the wider Kashmir valley as group bookings grew.

2016

Launched Ladakh routes

Started running the Leh-Nubra-Pangong circuit after two seasons of scouting permits and homestays ourselves.

2020

Built the 24ร—7 travel desk

Set up always-on support after a pandemic-era stranded group taught us why it mattered.

2024

Crossed 40 curated routes

Now running circuits across eight states with a network of forty-plus on-ground guides.
